The actual international airport (KZO) is located 12,5 km southeast of Kyzylorda and was open in 1988. The former airport built in 1920 was located where is the actual main bus station.

Here, we are going to talk about the cosmodrome (space center) and not about the mining town of Baikonur. Created in 1956, it is today the most active space center in the world with nearly 15 launches per year. The area leased by Russia is located 240 km northwest of Kyzylorda. The launch of the Soyuz rocket from the Baikonur cosmodrome is the spectacle of a long journey.

Baikonur is a famous cosmodrome located in Kazakhstan, which is of great importance for world astronautics. However, in addition to its cosmic glory, Baikonur and its surroundings also offer interesting tourist spots and have a rich history.
Foundation: Baikonur was founded in 1955 during the Soviet Union as a cosmodrome for launching rockets. Since then, it has become one of the most famous and actively used spaceports in the world.
Since its foundation by the kingdom of Kokand in 1820 and until its capture by the Russian troops in 1852, the fort was called Ak-Mechet (Ak-Meshit). Thus, the Count Vassili Perovski and General of the cavalry of Emperor Alexander II, took control of the southern borders of the Empire and dominated the khanate of Kokand. Fort Perovski takes its name in 1862, then Perovski city until 1925, when it will be named Kyzylorda (Kyzyl Orda in Kazakh means the red capital).
