Kazakhstan / Before you go

Before you cross the steppe.

Visas, Almaty access, Karkara/Kegen border updates, road distances, seasons, safety, national parks, and how Kazakhstan connects with Kyrgyzstan and the Silk Road.

Before you set off

Kazakhstan is not a country you “pass through.” It is a country you measure in horizons.

Around Almaty, snowy peaks rise above modern cafés, canyons, lakes, and national parks. Farther west and north, the land opens into steppe, desert, oil towns, ancient Silk Road cities, and landscapes so wide they change your sense of distance.

These answers are written to help you plan Kazakhstan realistically: where to enter, when to go, how to cross into Kyrgyzstan, what to expect on the road, and why a journey here works best when the route respects the scale of the country.

Your questions, answered

Kazakhstan has a broad visa-free regime, but the answer depends on your passport. The official Kazakhstan e-government visa regime list shows many nationalities can enter visa-free for up to 30 days on ordinary passports, while some countries have 60- or 90-day arrangements and others require a visa.

For travelers whose passport is not visa-free, Kazakhstan offers different visa categories. However, visa rules, eligible nationalities, stay limits, and registration/notification procedures can change, so travelers should check official Kazakh sources or their nearest Kazakh embassy before booking flights.

Nomad’s Land can advise you and help you interpret the route logic, but only Kazakh authorities can confirm your right to enter, stay, and cross a specific border.

Kazakhstan reality check

Kazakhstan rewards travelers who are ready for:

  • Long distances
    Big temperature differences
Modern cities and very remote landscapes
    Sudden weather on mountain roads
Border rules that depend on passport and visa type
National park routes that need time, not rushing
A country that looks simple on the map but feels enormous on the road

Ask us before choosing Karkara/Kegen

Karkara/Kegen can be the most beautiful way between Almaty and Karakol. It can also be the wrong choice if your visa type, season, vehicle, or border status does not match. Before building a route around this crossing, let us check whether it is open and usable for you.

Kazakhstan as the gateway

For many travelers, Kazakhstan is the best doorway into Central Asia: arrive in Almaty, explore canyons and alpine lakes, then cross toward Karakol, Bishkek, or the wider Silk Road.
