Uzgen

Uzgen is one of the oldest cities in the country, having been founded, according to Chinese chronicles, more than two thousand years ago in the 2nd century BC as a market village and supply point on the route from the Ferghana Valley to Kashgar.

In the 12th century, it became the second capital (under the name Mavarannahr) at the end of the Turkish Karakhanid dynasty, and its monuments are considered unique from a historical and cultural perspective.

From this era, there remains a madrasa, a mosque, and a minaret standing 44 meters high. There are also the tombs of important figures and the remnants of a 12th-century fortress, as well as a 19th-century mosque.

The architectural complex of Uzgen is also depicted on the national currency, the 50 som of Kyrgyzstan.
