Engilchek glacier

At the heart of the central Tien Shan, the Engilchek Glacier (Kyrgyz: Эңилчек) — also called Enilchek (Энильчек) or Inylchek (Иныльчек) — is the largest glacier in Kyrgyzstan. Its Kyrgyz name means "light," a surprising contrast with this immense river of ice that stretches over 60 km and covers about 657 km². It is located at the foot of mythical peaks like Khan Tengri and Jengish Chokusu, in one of the most isolated regions of the Tien Shan, to the east of the great Issyk-Kul Lake.

Each summer, the spectacular Lake Merzbacher appears in the heart of the glacier, a temporary glacial lake that suddenly empties during impressive natural floods. In the neighboring valleys, the ice gives way to Tien Shan spruce forests, junipers, and alpine meadows covered in flowers during the summer. This preserved nature shelters a rich wildlife: ibexes, marmots, golden eagles, and bearded vultures. The region is also one of the refuges for the snow leopard, a protected species whose population seems to be slowly increasing today due to conservation efforts in the Tien Shan mountains.

The main access to this spectacular region is from Karakol, ascending the wild Turgen Ak-Suu Valley. The route then crosses the Chong Ashuu Pass at an altitude of 3,822 meters, one of the gateways to the base camps of the Khan Tengri massif. Beyond the pass unfolds a world of high mountains, moraines, and immense glaciers, where the landscapes are among the most spectacular and wildest in Central Asia.
