Most arrivals approach through Khiva, but the journey begins earlier. Urgench is the practical base: airport, rail, hotels, markets and the road that carries most arrivals toward the walled center. Between the two, fields, canal villages, roadside shops and courtyards make the dry plain feel worked rather than empty. Khiva’s Itchan Kala deserves attention, yet the region cannot be treated as a walled display case. Guesthouses, cafés, restoration crews, ticket offices, craft sellers and local families all live with tourism pressing against the preserved core. That pressure is part of the story, especially when the streets are quiet in the morning and commercial by afternoon. Khorezm feels lower and flatter than Bukhara, with irrigation visible in almost every green strip. It also points west toward Karakalpakstan, Muynak and longer Aral Sea routes, so it often becomes the last comfortable base before delta and desert travel. The strongest reading keeps Khiva inside its plain: Urgench logistics, Amu Darya water, family courtyards, dry horizons and hosts who can explain where rice grows, which roads flood, and where visitors thin out after sunset. That frame also keeps Khiva fair. The city becomes more interesting, not less, when its tourism pressure, neighborhood life and agricultural hinterland remain visible.
