Murghab - Langar village

We begin the day in Murghab, the administrative center of the High Pamirs, situated at over 3,600 meters. After breakfast and loading up, we head southwest on the asphalt road toward the village of Alichur, passing through vast, open landscapes of the Pamir Plateau. Shortly before reaching Alichur, we make a stop at Lake Ak-Balyk, a serene spot known as the “White Fish” lake—considered sacred by locals and famous for its crystal-clear waters.

After a brief visit to Alichur, one of the coldest inhabited places in the former Soviet Union, we leave the paved road behind and head south into the high mountains. The road climbs steadily towards the Khargush Pass (4,344 m), offering panoramic views of remote valleys and a series of salt lakes, including Sasyk-Kel, Chukurkul, Khargush, and Karadara. The scenery becomes increasingly wild and dramatic as we follow the route along the Afghan border, where the Pamir River forms a natural frontier.

Eventually, we descend into the Wakhan Valley, with its sweeping views and scattered nomadic camps. The road continues along the river until we reach Langar, a remote village nestled at the confluence of the Pamir and Wakhan rivers. Langar is known for its petroglyphs and traditional Pamiri houses. Arrival and installation in a local guesthouse for a well-deserved rest after a long day of spectacular high-mountain travel.

Note: This road is closed due to snow and avalanche risk from January to April. Travel during these months is not recommended.
