Sary-Mogol village - Murghab

We set off early in the morning from Sary Mogol, as a long and spectacular day of high-altitude travel lies ahead. Heading south, we quickly approach the Kyrgyz-Tajik border, entering the Kizil-Art Pass region at 4,282 meters. This is a remote and windswept frontier zone, where we complete customs and entry formalities into the Autonomous Oblast of Gorno-Badakhshan (GBAO)—a unique and culturally rich part of eastern Tajikistan.

Beyond the pass, the road descends toward the wide, blue expanse of Karakul Lake, set at 3,914 meters above sea level. Surrounded by barren hills and salt-crusted shores, this immense high-altitude lake stretches across the plateau like a mirror to the sky. We skirt its eastern shoreline, with occasional stops for photos or short walks, before beginning the long climb to the Ak-Baital Pass, the highest point of the day—and of the entire Pamir Highway—at 4,658 meters. The landscape here is stark, dramatic, and often windswept, with stunning views across empty valleys and jagged ridgelines.

As we descend from the pass, the road begins to hug the flanks of the Muzkol massif, whose snow-capped peaks, including the towering Muzkol Peak (6,233 m), dominate the horizon. We are now deep in one of the most remote and economically challenged regions of Tajikistan, home primarily to Pamiri and Kyrgyz communities, who live in small, scattered villages across the plateau.

By late afternoon, we arrive in Murghab, a windswept settlement at over 3,600 meters, where we settle into a local guesthouse for the night. Here, in the heart of the Eastern Pamirs, life moves slowly but with resilience, shaped by the rhythms of altitude, climate, and tradition.
