Murghab - Sary-Mogol village

We depart in the morning from Murghab, the windswept heart of the Eastern Pamirs, surrounded by vast plateaus and snow-dusted peaks. As we leave the village, the road climbs gently, then steadily, through a region shaped by altitude and isolation. Our route begins to trace the flanks of the Muzkol massif, where the jagged silhouette of Muzkol Peak (6,233 m) rises sharply above the valley—one of the giants of the Eastern Pamirs.

The landscape becomes increasingly barren as we begin our ascent toward the Ak-Baital Pass, the highest point on the Pamir Highway at 4,658 meters. The air is thin, the wind constant, and the views immense. After crossing the pass, we descend into the Karakul basin, where the brilliant blue of Karakul Lake appears like a mirage. At 3,914 meters, it is one of the largest and highest saltwater lakes in Central Asia. We follow its eastern shoreline, stopping along the way to take in the stillness and surreal beauty of this high-altitude plateau.

Beyond Karakul, we begin the final climb to the Kyzyl-Art Pass (4,282 m), the border crossing between Tajikistan and Kyrgyzstan. At the top of the pass, we complete exit formalities from Gorno-Badakhshan and Tajikistan. The descent into Kyrgyzstan offers a dramatic change in scenery—the rugged Pamir Plateau gives way to broader, greener valleys.

By late afternoon, we reach the welcoming village of Sary Mogol, set beneath the mighty Lenin Peak range. Surrounded by pastures and open sky, this Kyrgyz settlement offers a softer contrast to the stark landscapes of the day. We settle into a local guesthouse, with time to rest or take a short stroll through the village and enjoy views of the surrounding mountains.
